Thin Film - Testing Specialist

Role Summary:
The Engineering Test Specialist - Thin Film performs hands-on shop processes and directs technical assignments involving the application of thin film strain gauges, jet engine component part cleaning / surface preparation, and other related processes. In this role you will collaborate with senior specialists, engineers and project personnel to ensure that Test Systems Engineering provides quality processing support to its customers.
Essential Responsibilities:
  • Performs hands-on shop processes to accomplish diverse and complex assignments in support of thin film strain gauge application and development
  • Collaborates with customer personnel on possible applications for surface preparation and thin film strain gauge application processes in support of NPI engine development and other associated activities.
  • Develops, plans and manually accomplishes individual strain gauge application processes for assigned target components
  • Develops, plans and manually accomplishes super cleaning and surface preparation processes for assigned target components
  • Manages and accomplishes manual tasks to maintain laboratory resources and equipment, including sputtering machines, with direction from more senior specialists and engineers

In addition, as an Engineering Test Specialist, you will:
  • Support process improvement and technology development efforts with supervision and guidance from Lead Technicians and Engineering
  • Write Technical documents, test procedures, Operations instructions

  • Qualifications/Requirements:
    • Bachelors' degree in an applicable technical discipline from an accredited university or college {Or an Associate's degree from an accredited school or institution (i.e. Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Chemical Engineering Technology, etc.) with two years of work experience in an applicable laboratory or shop environment}
    • Must be physically capable of standing and working on your feet for moderately long periods of time (one to three hours), and working in potentially cramped spaces for limited periods of time
    • Must be physically capable of lifting and carrying items weighing as much as 50 lbs.
    • Must be willing and able to work in a fast paced, schedule-driven, and potentially stressful laboratory / shop environment
    • Ability and willingness to work overtime when required

    Desired Characteristics:
    • Ability to understand engineering drawings and schematics
    • Thin Film Sputtering operational experience in DC Magnetron, RF Magnetron and AC / DC Reactive Sputtering
    • Experience sputtering alumina, nichrome and gold
    • Good overall knowledge and understanding of Vacuum Technology, and working with vacuum equipment
    • Experience cleaning, maintaining and repairing Sputtering machines and associated equipment (Cryopumps / Compressors, Sputtering Power Supplies (RF and DC), Mechanical Pumps, Target Cathodes
    • Experience utilizing system's Programable Logic Controller to troubleshoot and remedy operational issues / problems as they occur
    • Experience operating and maintaining thin film associated equipment, including Plasma Cleaners, Ion Source cleaners, Ultraviolet Exposure systems, Thermal Compression Bonding equipment, and Surface Profilers
    • Experience with Photofabrication processes
    • Photolithography experience, including Positive / Negative Resist applications and exposures, etching processes
    • Quality Control experience inspecting coatings under 10-20x magnification
    • Polishing experience (hand Polish to improve surface roughness on substrate materials Inconel, Titanium, A286, Rene)
    • Experience inspecting polish under 10-20X magnification to determine defects (pits and heavy scratches) and surface finish
    • Experience performing thin film substrate cleaning procedures and processes. Clean room discipline and cleanliness levels (equivalent to Class 10K clean room)
    • Experience designing fixturing to adapt to engine hardware for thin film or other processing
    • Experience working with engineering to make process improvements
    • Perform testing and coating analysis work (coating structure, adherence)
    • Active Clean Lab mentality with experience working in a cleanroom environment
    • Instrumentation background, knowledge of instrumentation
    • Willingness and ability to obtain and maintain a US Government security clearance.
