Types of airport jobs

Should you be more of a people-person, passenger service jobs will be right up your alley! Generally, there are three key places you’ll work – the check-in desk, the boarding gate and in announcements.

Check-in work is very much customer-facing. You’ll check in travellers and print their boarding passes as well as answer plenty of questions on the specifics of the flight so a decent ability to recall facts will help! Not only that, but staying friendly, patient and calm, no matter how many hundreds of people you’ve interacted with that hour, will help! Working at the boarding gate involves checking boarding passes and ensuring that customers can get to their seats as hoped - especially if they have accessibility needs. Finally, announcements are a key part of this role. Changes to flights, cancellations, boarding and other pieces of information need to go out constantly so having a clear and careful speaking voice will help in this role.

Baggage handling is better for those that are careful, diligent in their duties and prefer to stay behind the scenes. It’s important that you enjoy physical work as your key duty is to get luggage on and off aircraft safely and securely. It’s also really important that you are honest and reliable. Often you’ll often be needed for clearing snow and ice from both craft and the runway so, again, a preference for labour is good for this role.

Getting into the industry

Fortunately, airport jobs rarely require higher or further education to get started. You will need a few GCSEs at A*-C or equivalent though, as there is plenty of English, Maths and ICT involved at airports. Ensuring you can adequately read and calculate flight information, as well as operate the computer systems involved is key to these kinds of roles. It’s also possible to start via an apprenticeship in Aviation Operations so do research this if it makes more sense. Previous customer servicer experience will absolutely help your application, and living near the airport will be important too. As airports are more or less 24-hour places, you need to be too. Shift patterns are very common in this work, so don’t apply unless you can get yourself about safely and reliably at any hour of the day.

Career development

In many airport jobs, there is room for development with senior positions in any area. Those that do well may find opportunities to move into management, training or teaching once they’ve gotten a decent amount of experience.
