The Technical Publications Group is responsible for providing quality documentation sufficient for our customers to maintain their simulator devices for the lifetime of the product. The purpose of the role of a Technical Publications Author is to undertake technical publications and authoring activities to meet customer requirements. This is typically the creation of new or amendment of existing documents to enable the customer to maintain and operate a flight simulator device.
The Technical Publications Author has a further technical role in ensuring the manner in which technical problems are resolved is in line with local department and company procedures.
Higher-grade roles may include the supervision of staff and budgetary responsibility, with support from the Team Leader. This would involve the prioritizing of tasks and managing work patterns to make most efficient and effective use resources. Input would also be sought into individuals’ annual performance appraisals.
Core duties will involve, but not be limited to:
•Analysis of aircraft and equipment manufacturer’s data
•Creation and modification of operating and maintenance documentation
•Creation and modification of illustrations and images to support documentation
•Creation and modification of interactive electronic technical manuals
•Interfacing with internal customers, product training and design and support engineers
•Maintaining plans/schedules and reporting progress
•Interfacing with customers
At higher grades, responsibility may also include:
•Line management responsibility for 1-3 staff
•Training and mentoring of other engineers
•Plan and direct the work of others
•Provide inputs to bids and technical proposals
•Technical authority for a particular system or subject matter
•Assist in defining processes
•Acting as an expert within the group for a product, system or functional area
Essential skills and experience:
Exposure to modern computer software including Windows, Office and planning software.
Awareness of documentation lifecycle from release of statement of work to final delivery.
Previous experience of:
•HTML based editing tools
•XML based editing tools
•Image editing tools
•Website creation to W3C standards
Preferably with prior experience in using:
•Document revision control
•Adobe Dreamweaver documentation editor
•Arbortext documentation editor
•IsoDraw image editor
•Integrated logistic support or through life support engineering principles
•Product Lifecycle Management tools
Higher grades will have:
•Demonstrated ability to coach, train, plan and manage the work of others
•Demonstrated ability to perform as a lead engineer
•Awareness of methods of tasking and budget control
•Focus on customers
•Innovate, decide and act quickly
•Will have demonstrated technical expertise, problem solving skills
•Good communication and inter-personal skills
Qualification and educational requirements:
A suitable degree (or equivalent) with Maths, Science or Engineering content or a minimum 4 years appropriate experience in industry.
Typically at least 2 years’ experience in technical reporting or publications field
Hours: Full time – 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday
